Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Earns a Major Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. During a period often characterized by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and turned it into a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."

Executive Acclaim

In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and championed its peculiarly charming sensibility.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. It offers something surprisingly comfy about watching this charming family navigate their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to evolve comedy past its long-running sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

The Path Forward

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well help usher in that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to bask in the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
