Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“What reassures me, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.
“Still unsure,” he added. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”
NYPD released surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt according to reports.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday near MSG and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was taken to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.
“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd did not participate this season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
Boyd came to New York as a free agent in spring and was anticipated to become an important component of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on 2 August and had to be helped off.
Boyd has remained around the team all season long while healing from his surgery.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
