Individuals from across the partisan spectrum and the entertainment world are coming together to censure former President Donald Trump for his comments following the shocking deaths of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Los Angeles residence, Trump took to his platform to label the deceased director as "anguished and suffering". The post, he asserted Reiner's demise was "because of the hostility he caused others through his enormous, unyielding, and untreatable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post then pivoted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".
Authorities have since announced the detention of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in relation to the incident. It is reported his bond was established at a substantial amount.
The reaction to Trump's words was swift and harsh.
This is a disgusting and vile comment,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly condemned the statements. She pointed to prior comments from Trump regarding political violence, asking, "Have you no decency? Is it possible to get any lower?"
The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "This is a disturbed man."
Echoing this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a contemptible piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."
A number of GOP lawmakers also voiced disapproval.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". She also alluded to struggles with addiction and psychological well-being within families.
Another Republican representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disgraceful" considering the nature of the deaths. He openly dared others in his party to justify the comments.
Rob Reiner was long a outspoken critic of Donald Trump. During a previous interview, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also warned about the dangers of authoritarian rule if Trump return to power.
"There is autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner said. "If we crumble, there’s a risk that democratic systems collapse around the world."
Despite his strong opposition, Reiner had in the past expressed "complete revulsion" and condemned political violence unequivocally following the killing of another political figure.
Adding a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously recounted the story of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "special hairspray" while posing on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
